Newborn Photography FAQs: Everything New Parents Need to Know

Your Essential Guide to Newborn Photography FAQs

Becoming a new parent can feel overwhelming and you might feel like your to-do has grown legs overnight, but fear not, I can help you navigate this new world by answering your questions about newborn photography with this guide to the exciting world of newborn photoshoots, and maybe take one thing off your list of jobs!

As a specialist newborn and baby photographer covering Rawtenstall, Bury and wider Lancashire, I have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with you to help you feel more relaxed and comfortable about your baby’s newborn shoot and one of the first outings you will make as a family.

1. When is the best time for a newborn photoshoot?

Generally, the ideal window for posed newborn photography is between 5-14 days old. During this time, babies tend to sleep more soundly, allowing for easier posing and a calmer environment. However, beautiful newborn photos can be captured outside this timeframe too! Lifestyle sessions or milestone sessions can be done at any age.

2. Where will my newborn photography session take place?

I am based in a studio in the small town of Edenfield, close to Bury and Rawtenstall. Having a professional newborn studio allows me to provide a controlled setting with specialised lighting and backdrops. Ideal for achieving those classic posed portraits and intricate setups. My studios has a well-stocked wardrobe of adorable props and outfits for your baby to use, and we will discuss your favourite colours and styles at your newborn consultation session.

3. What should I wear to the photoshoot?

Comfort is key as the studio can be quite warm (to keep baby happy), so layers work really well, allowing you to keep cool as the temperature increases.  Opt for clothing in neutral colours which will complement your baby’s outfits and also make for timeless images. Logos, trends and bold patterns tend to date over time – just check out pretty much any 80’s photograph!

4. What should I bring to the session?
  • Plenty of nappies and wipes! You will definitely use more than normal.
  • Feeding supplies (bottles, formula, breast pump)
  • Bibs and muslin squares
  • Dummy, if baby uses one (they come in very handy even if just for the shoot)
  • Snacks and drinks for you and your partner. I have plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits but you may prefer something more substantial (there is a lovely bakery in Edenfield).

5. How long does a newborn photoshoot typically last?

Newborn sessions are designed to be flexible and cater to your baby’s needs. Sessions typically last up to 4 hours, allowing ample time for feeding, changing, and comforting your little one.

6. Can I include siblings and pets in the photos?

Absolutely! I definitely encourage capturing the love and connection between siblings or the whole family. we can chat about who will be involved when we meet for your pre-session consultation.

7. How much does newborn photography cost?

The cost of a newborn photography session in my studio starts at £299.  Pricing can be found on my website.

8. What should I look for in a newborn photographer?

Experience and safety are paramount. I have been photographing newborns for many years and safety is always my top priority. Not all baby’s will pose in the same way, and so I work with your baby and photograph poses they are comfortable with. Baby’s are never balanced or left in props alone, in fact, I will often ask dads to help out with plenty of direction from me. You can see my style of work if you look at my portfolio and you will see I have many client reviews which will help you make a decision as to whether I am the right photographer for you.

9. Can I include cultural elements in the photoshoot?

Absolutely! Incorporating elements of your cultural background or family traditions into the photos can create a beautiful and personal touch. Just let me know at your consultation session and we can decide how to include them.

10. What happens if my baby is fussy during the session?

Newborns are unpredictable! Don’t worry if your baby cries or needs frequent feeding breaks throughout. I leave four hours for each newborn session to give us plenty of time to work at your baby’s pace. I have plenty of tips and tricks to help soothe your baby.

11. What if my baby doesn’t sleep during their newborn session?

As an experienced newborn photographer, I have a bag of tricks to help soothe your baby to sleep. This might include white noise apps, swaddling techniques, and a lovely warm studio.

12. How do newborn photographers achieve all of those gorgeous poses?

While some poses seem effortless in the final photos, achieving them can take time and patience. I use a posing table, posing beans, blankets, and other posing aids to safely position newborns for specific shots.

What Happens After Newborn Photography Session?

After we’ve completed your shoot, I’ll spend some time carefully editing and picking out the best images to add to your gallery.

Around 10 days later, you’ll receive an invitation to come into my studio for your ordering appointment. Here, you’ll be able to look through your photographs and select a package of digital and printed images. This is often quite an emotional experience (don’t worry, I have tissues!).

I’ll also show you sample products you might wish to purchase, including framed prints, canvases, and albums.

What do my newborn clients say about me?

Here are a few comments from previous customers:

Chloe said:

“I could not recommend summer enough! We had a maternity shoot and a newborn shoot for our little boy Romeo. Summer was so patient with Romeo and captured the most beautiful photos that we will treasure forever and we cannot thank her enough”.

“I’ve had two photoshoots of my baby with Summer so far and both have been amazing! She manages to capture such lovely images and his personality shows in all photos, even when my son wasn’t well for his Christmas shoot. I’ve not been able to choose a favourite from any of the photos!
I’m glad I had the opportunity to meet Summer through Baby Sensory and I wouldn’t trust anyone else to capture memories of my baby! Highly recommend!
Can’t wait to book back in for my son’s birthday photoshoot!”
